Finding Balance: A Tech Solopreneur's Approach to 2025

As a female solopreneur running a tech-focused social media research business, I've learned that success isn't just about managing projects and meeting deadlines – it's about creating harmony between professional growth and personal wellbeing. That's why I've chosen "Balance" as my guiding word for 2025. While it might not be the most original choice, it perfectly captures what I'm striving to achieve in both my business and personal life.

The Creative-Technical Balance

Many assume that running a tech business means being glued to a computer screen 24/7. However, I've discovered that incorporating creative projects into my routine actually enhances my professional performance. Take my recent friendship bracelet project for our end-of-year gratitude campaign – what started as a creative outlet became a meaningful way to connect with clients and partners. I spent New Years Day reviewing my Q1 and Q2 travel plans and made a few bracelets for upcoming conferences and shows to keep the friendship and collaboration idea going. Making them in bulk now saves me time later (when I will be prone to overpacking!)

Similarly, one of my first big DIY projects of the year will be finishing my wall-mounted standing desk unit I teased on LinkedIn a few weeks ago. This idea isn’t just about creating a functional workspace. It’s also an opportunity to step away from screens for the planning process, work with my hands, and problem-solve in a different way (measurements, angles, painting, oh my!). These creative projects provide a mental reset that helps me approach technical challenges with a fresh perspective.

Practical Steps Toward Balance

Here's how I'm structuring my approach to balance in 2025:

1. Time Blocking with Flexibility

I’ve thrived being a time blocker - within reason. Since incorporating Calendly into my scheduling options with clients and research participants, it’s made me be more intentional thinking ahead of when I am actually available to be the most efficient. Other ways this time block strategy works:

- Dedicated morning hours for creative thinking and task making
- Afternoon blocks for deep work and technical tasks, deep dives into detailed elements
- Hydration breaks!
- Buffer zones between meetings for unexpected issues

2. Health as a Business Priority

I’m not secretive about the fertility issues I’ve had and working on. One of which includes weightloss and activity improvements. While I’m down (and have kept off) 20 pounds so far, the colder months make it hard to get fresh air living in downtown Chicago. Busting out my home walking pad, using my condo gym, and incorporating more veggies and whole foods are all in the 2025 plan. Plus:

- Sleep isn't negotiable – it's as important as any client meeting and something I sacrificed quite a bit in 2024. I’m currently testing out a mouth tape for the perceived health benefits.
- Standing desk sessions throughout the day - the one I am building!
- Walking breaks between calls (even if just around my home office and condo)
- Regular health check-ups scheduled like quarterly business reviews to check in on weight loss and energy goals

3. Project Management with Purpose

- Evaluating new projects based on both business growth and personal interest - while I love a challenge, I need to better balance challenging projects and their time/energy against other open studies so that all clients get right attention.
- Building in time for skill development and learning - especially in areas like writing (this blog, our monthly newsletter, social media content, and oh yeah! The book I need to finish!)
- Setting realistic timelines that account for creative breaks
- Maintaining a sustainable workload that allows for personal projects

The Reality of Solo Business Management

Being a solopreneur means wearing many hats – from tech expert to business developer to creative director. While juggling open projects, managing project bids, and handling day-to-day operations, it's easy to let personal wellbeing slide. However, I've learned that maintaining balance isn't selfish – it's essential for delivering quality work to clients.

My goal isn't perfect balance (which likely doesn't exist), but rather intentional imbalance. Some weeks will be heavy on client work, others might focus more on creative projects or personal health. The key is recognizing these shifts and adjusting accordingly.

Looking Ahead

As I step into 2025, I'm approaching balance as both a personal mission and a business strategy. This means:

- Being intentional about project selection
- Making time for both technical skills and creative expression
- Prioritizing health without guilt
- Celebrating small wins in both personal and professional realms

For other solopreneurs, especially women in tech, remember that your business's success is intrinsically linked to your personal wellbeing. Finding your version of balance might look different from mine, but it's worth the effort to discover what works for you.

What's your approach to balancing personal and professional goals? I'd love to hear your strategies for maintaining equilibrium while running a business.
